Town of Kill Devil Hills to Host Free Youth Mental Health First Aid Course
Do you want to learn valuable skills to help identify and understand mental health challenges among adolescents as well as how to offer vital support to young people in need?
The Town of Kill Devil Hills will be hosting a Youth Mental Health First Aid Course (YMHFA), free of charge, on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at the Town Hall (102 Town Hall Drive, KDH) for interested adults who seek to make a difference in the lives of young people. Participants must live, work, or worship in Dare County in order to participate in this training.
The Town is partnering with Dare County Department of Health and Human Services and its Breaking Through Task Force, which will teach the course. Before the in-person class on September 17th, an additional two hours of pre-course work are required.
This course is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, neighbors, and caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12 – 18) who is experiencing a mental health or addiction challenge or is in crisis.
“In today’s world, Youth Mental Health First Aiders are so important in ensuring that those who need it get the support and help they need during difficult times,” said certified YMHFA instructor Kelly Fleming, who is The Breaking Through Task Force co-chair and Dare County Department of Health & Human Services Health Education & Outreach Supervisor. “During this course, participants will learn how to use a proven five-step action plan that can help them to identify and safely respond to potential mental health challenges.”
