Water Service Line Survey

If you own, lease, or manage multiple properties in Kill Devil Hills, please help us by completing a short survey. (Please complete one survey for each property.)

In an effort to identify potential sources of lead in public drinking water systems, the EPA is requiring that all public water systems across the US document the materials of every water service line connected to the water system.

Are you prepared for a hurricane?

The height of active hurricane season is just ahead with the peak of the season being mid-Sept. Regardless of any immediate/recent threats, you should always be prepared and have an updated plan. We are the most impacted stretch of coastline by hurricanes and it only takes one storm to change your life and community. We can't stress the importance of preparing and planning enough. If we can help you in doing so, please don't hesitate to reach out, emergencymanagement@kdhnc.com.

  • Have multiple ways to get weather alerts
  • Stock your emergency kit
  • Know your evacuation routes
  • Have alternative shelter locations

Grilling Safety

Grilling out this holiday weekend? Be sure to follow these simple tips so our duty crew doesn’t show up to your cookout:

  • Keep it Clean: Clean your grill before use to prevent flare-ups caused by grease buildup.
  • Stay Attentive: Never leave your grill unattended. Stay close by and keep a watchful eye. And keep children and pets at least 3’ away from the grill area.
  • Safe Setup: Place your grill at least 10 feet away from buildings, trees, and any flammable materials.
  • Check for Leaks: If you're using a gas grill, inspect the hose for leaks before firing it up.
  • Use Proper Tools: Long-handled tools keep you at a safe distance from the heat and flames.
  • Control the Flames: Have a spray bottle of water and a fire extinguisher nearby to handle any small flare-ups.
  • Proper Disposal: Allow coals to cool completely before disposing of them in a metal container.

At its June 26, 2024, meeting, the Kill Devil Hills Board of Commissioners approved a Town ordinance that prohibits overnight parking at the Town’s public beach and sound accesses from 2 a.m. – 4 a.m. unless a parking permit is displayed. The ordinance is intended to prohibit abuse by those who use public accesses as overflow parking, and limiting residents and property owners use of the Town’s facilities. The access parking permit will allow residents and property owners of Kill Devil Hills to park at the access from 2 a.m. – 4 a.m. At all other times our public accesses will remain open for all. Do I need a permit? KDH residents and property owners who would like to park at a KDH access between the times of 2 a.m. – 4 a.m. should get a permit. If you feel that you will not be parking during those times an access parking permit is not needed. How do I get a permit? Stop by the Finance Department on the 2nd floor at Kill Devil Hills Town Hall, 102 Town Hall Drive open Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to pick up your free permit. A proof of residency will be required (i.e., driver’s license, tax records, water bill, etc.) before a decal can be issued. Where do I display the permit? The permit is a decal which must be displayed on the back windshield of your vehicle, on the lower driver’s side. The Board of Commissioners’ commitment is for each sound or beach goer to have a fair chance at a parking space without restricting KDH residents and property owners access at any time. If you have any questions please contact Town Staff at 252-449-5300.

The Outer Banks Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan update is currently underway, and Dare County and Currituck County—as well as each county’s incorporated communities—are seeking input from the public on changes in risks and vulnerabilities as well as new opportunities for mitigation. This Outer Banks Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan update is required for all communities to maintain eligibility for pre- and post-disaster mitigation funding from FEMA. In addition, this effort will help local communities to understand their vulnerability and develop ways to proactively mitigate risk, helping to better protect people and property from the potential effects of natural and human-caused hazards. Public input is critical to the planning process. Please take a few minutes to complete a brief public survey to provide your input on hazard risks and mitigation options.
