Water Service Line Survey

If you own, lease, or manage multiple properties in Kill Devil Hills, please help us by completing a short survey. (Please complete one survey for each property.)

In an effort to identify potential sources of lead in public drinking water systems, the EPA is requiring that all public water systems across the US document the materials of every water service line connected to the water system.

ater Service Line Survey If you own, lease, or manage multiple properties in Kill Devil Hills, please help us by completing a short survey. (Please complete one survey for each property.) In an effort to identify potential sources of lead in public drinking water systems, the EPA is requiring that all public water systems across the US document the materials of every water service line connected to the water system. This includes the water system-owned service lines from the water main to the meter and the customer-owned water service lines from the meter to the house or building. The Town of Kill Devil Hills has predominately plastic tubing water service lines and has some older homes with copper water service lines. While the Town can document that service lines are either plastic or copper, we still are required to document the customer-owned portion of the service lines and their material makeup. This is the line that runs from the water meter at the property line into the home or business. The most common customer-side service line material is PVC, but some older homes may have copper, galvanized steel, or potentially lead if the home was built before 1988. Please help us by completing the short survey with as much information as you can. If you’re unsure, that’s okay, let us know that too! Any customer-owned lines we are unable to identify the material of will have to be categorized as ‘unknown-unlikely lead’ or ‘unknown-likely lead’ on the survey based on the age of the home.

Your input is important and we thank you for your time!

The first step is to be sure that you know how to swim before you enter the water. The ocean just isn’t the same as swimming in a pool. ?? Swim near a lifeguard. ?? Always have a buddy with you and take a floatation device that will help you float if you become tired or get caught in a rip current. ?? Avoid swimming at dawn or dusk and when it is dark outside. ?? If the weather conditions show that a storm is approaching or you hear thunder, immediately move off the beach and seek safe shelter to avoid lightning strikes. Follow these few simple safety measures:

  • Working smoke alarms  in every sleeping room. Working smoke alarms outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home.
  • Working smoke alarms should be interconnected. When one alarm sounds, they all sound.
  • Portable fire extinguishers are in the house and are easy to access.
  • Working carbon monoxide alarms outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home and in other locations as required.
  • Be familiar with the floor plan and note all escape routes and exits.
  • Everyone knows the address of the home.
  • Upon arrival, everyone staying in the home should identify two ways out of every room and how to escape in an emergency.
  • All doors and windows that lead outside should be able to open.
  • An outside meeting place that is safely away from the home should be identified.
