First Flight Farmers Market

with a Special Guest Appearance

Come shop locally and show your support for our small businesses at the First Flight Farmers Market on Tuesday, August 8th.

A special guest will be making an appearance at this market. Here’s a hint: He’s flying in from over 4,000 miles away – can you guess who?!

It’s Santa! He needs a vacation; he has gotten so tired from making and double-checking his list, he decided to take a break and visit Kill Devil Hills.

Santa’s sleigh is expected to land at Aviation Park around 11:00 a.m. A special Christmas tune will be played throughout the market to signal his arrival. Be on the lookout for him strolling around the market (he’ll be in his summer attire) and have your cameras ready for a quick photo!

Bonus: the Town will have giveaways at this market (while supplies last) - don't miss out!!

New playground equipment at Meekins Field Park

Come Play All Day

at Meekins Field Park!

The Town of Kill Devil Hills hosted a Grand Opening on August 3, 2023,  to celebrate the official Grand Opening of our Splash Pad and Meekins Field Park improvements.

The event included a welcome and ribbon cutting from the Town’s Board of Commissioners, delicious treats from Island Snowball Company and Duck Donuts, and yummy hotdogs grilled by Town staff. There were also special Kill Devil Hills giveaways to commemorate the occasion. Overall, what the event featured the most was many smiling faces and joyous laughs from children and community members.

The Town is beyond proud to present our community with the first Splash Pad in Dare County. Not only do we have an awesome Splash Pad, but Meekins Field Park has had many other recent upgrades, including brand new playground equipment (and we’re in the process of completing a fun new play area for toddlers, too!), a new restroom building, with a family bathroom that hosts a changing table, drinking fountains and a water bottle refill station,  a new picnic shelter with tables, sidewalks throughout the park, upgraded lighting, and an expanded parking lot and new drop off circle. Meekins Field has also expanded beyond just a one-sport-park, as there is now a large open play field, which can be used for all kinds of activities like soccer, lacrosse, football, kickball, or just a good old game of catch. And, the ever-popular courts for tennis, and now pickleball, located at this park are undergoing renovations and will be available soon!

Event Location: Meekins Field Park, 1634 North Croatan Highway in Kill Devil Hills

More information about the Splash Pad can be found on the Town’s website.

NCDOT Seeks Public Input for

Next 10-Year Transportation Plan

The N.C. Department of Transportation is beginning to evaluate projects for its next 10-year capital plan and wants the public to be involved.

The State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) identifies construction and funding schedules for state transportation projects over a 10-year period. NCDOT is seeking project input for the STIP that will cover 2026-2035.

A 30-day public comment period will run from Aug. 1-31. Within this time frame, the public can send in their comments and suggestions in a short, interactive survey, or may visit local NCDOT offices during designated, weeklong drop-in periods to ask questions and submit comments in person.

More information on ways to provide feedback can be found on the 2026-2035 STIP webpage.

Please note that this comment period is not for maintenance-related projects, such as patching potholes, resurfacing, or ditches. NCDOT uses a different method to prioritize maintenance projects.

This initial round of public input will help produce a list of projects across all six modes of transportation that will be scored based on a data-driven process called Strategic Prioritization.

Additional public comment periods will be held prior to the first draft of the 2026-2035 STIP being released in early 2025.
