"When you buy from a small business, you are not helping a CEO buy a third vacation home. you are helping a little girl get dance lessons, a little boy get his team jersey, a mom & dad put food on the table and pay a mortgage, a student pay for college, and allowing an artist to continue pursuing their dreams.”

Prepare to Protect.

Preparing for disasters is protecting everyone you love.
Are you ready for an emergency?

Emergency Planning for Families:
Make sure your family has a plan in place in case of an emergency. Before an emergency happens, sit down together and decide how you will get in contact with each other, where you will go and what you will do in an emergency.

Emergency Planning for Pets:
Be sure to include your pets in your disaster preparedness planning. Map out pet-friendly accommodations, in the event of an evacuation. Have an emergency supply kit ready for your pets. Confirm that your pets have up-to-date identification and contact information on their collars, tags, and microchips.

Emergency Planning for Businesses:
Every year, emergencies can drastically affect businesses. By planning ahead business owners can limit injury, property damage, and return to daily operations sooner. Business owners should take precautions by: having plans in place to ensure staff safety, reviewing insurance coverage, improving cyber security, securing their facility and any equipment.

Nags Head Woods Preserve
2022 Bow Hunting Season

The Nature Conservancy allows bow hunting for white-tailed deer in the Nags Head Woods Preserve; the annual hunt is designed to manage the deer herd and to ensure the herd’s health.  The regular hunting season runs September 10, 2022, through January 2, 2023. Interested hunters must attend an orientation session and complete an application form which includes a $50 fee (to cover the cost of hunt administration and liability insurance).  All orientation sessions are held at Nags Head Woods Preserve, 701 West Ocean Acres Drive, Kill Devil Hills.  Please call (252) 441-2525 ext. 2 with any questions or email at nagsheadwoods@tnc.org.

If you are visiting Nags Head Woods as a non-hunter (i.e. if you are hiking, running, or fishing), always respect our year-round regulations: stay on designated hiking trails and keep dogs leashed.  Hunters have specific safety zones and are not allowed to hunt within 100 yards of designated hiking trails.  We appreciate your consideration of the various ways the public uses and enjoys Nags Head Woods.

Hunter Orientation Sessions Schedule:

Tuesday August 23, 5:30 p.m.
Wednesday August 24, 5:30 p.m.
Tuesday August 30, 5:30 p.m.
Wednesday August 31, 5:30 p.m.
how to prevent heat stroke

How can heat stroke be prevented?

By taking a few precautions, you can protect yourself and your family from heat exhaustion and heat stroke when the temperatures creep up.

  • Stay hydrated! Drink more water than usual and don’t wait until you’re thirsty.
  • Those at high risk for heat-related illness– young children, the elderly and people with chronic medical conditions– should stay in an air-conditioned environment on days when the temperature exceeds 95 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Pace yourself while exercising or playing in hot weather. Be sure to take breaks in the shade.
  • Protect your skin, using reef-safe sunscreen and reapplying every two hours.
  • Cover up with a wide-brimmed hat. Wear lightweight and light-colored clothing.
  • Provide your pets plenty of water in shady areas.
  • Do not leave children or pets in parked cars, even if the windows are cracked open. Cars can quickly heat up to dangerous temperatures.
  • Sign up for beach condition alerts on OBXAlerts.com, including extreme heat alerts and safety tips or by texting OBXBEACHCONDITIONS to 77295
