Every second counts in a home fire - plan and practice your escape.

Have you met EDITH? The KDH Fire Department would like to introduce you:

Exit Drills In The Home

How fast does fire move? Very fast. You could have less than two minutes to get out safely once the smoke alarm sounds.

  • Learn two ways out of every room in your home in case one exit is blocked or too dangerous to use. A second way out can include an escape ladder for rooms on an upper level.
  • Pick a meeting place that’s a safe distance from your home.
  • Practice getting low and moving to your exits in case there is smoke.
  • Test your smoke alarms with your kids so they know what the beep sounds like.
  • Use a timer to ensure everyone is at the safety spot in two minutes or less.
  • Have a home fire drill at least twice a year.

From Dare County

Burn Ban Issued for Unincorporated Areas

As of 12 p.m. today (Friday, March 21, 2025), a Burn Ban has been issued for all unincorporated areas of Dare County under the North Carolina Fire Code Section 307.1.1 Prohibited Open Burning. Open burning shall be prohibited when atmospheric conditions or local circumstances make such fires hazardous.

Dare County Fire Marshal Steve Kovacs reminds citizens that all burning within 100 feet of any structure is banned within the unincorporated areas of Dare County. The burn ban does not apply to charcoal or gas grills, provided fire safety precautions are taken.

This ban is in coordination with the Statewide Burn Ban implemented this morning by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and the North Carolina Forest Service. The current and future weather forecast models indicate conditions that are not favorable to open burning.

The burn ban will remain in place until further notice. If you have questions regarding the burn ban, please contact the Dare County Fire Marshal’s Office at 252-475-5750.

Reminder from the Kill Devil Hills Fire Marshal: There is NO open burning permitted within the Town of Kill Devil Hills at any time.
