KDH Offices to Remain Closed on 01/23/25

Due to Winter Storm Impacts

Due to the significant impacts caused by the winter storm that affected the area overnight, all Kill Devil Hills offices and facilities will remain closed on Thursday, January 23, 2025.

The winter storm brought several inches of snow across the county, as well as icy road conditions and dangerously cold temperatures, making travel and outdoor activity hazardous. The safety of our residents and visitors remains the Town’s top priority.

Depending on weather and travel conditions, all Town offices and facilities are anticipated to re-open on Friday, January 24, 2025.

Please continue to monitor weather conditions.

A Winter Weather Advisory for black ice and patchy freezing drizzle is in effect tonight for Eastern NC until 10am Thursday. Any snow that melts this afternoon will quickly refreeze after sunset, and lead to treacherous black ice on roads and bridges. The best chance for some patchy freezing drizzle is east of Highway 17 overnight.

A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect for all of Eastern NC until 10am Thursday. Minimum 'Feels Like' temperatures will range from the single digits to the teens tonight into Thursday morning.

Everyone is strongly encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel. If you must travel, use extreme caution, ensure your vehicle is properly equipped for winter weather conditions, and be mindful of North Carolina Department of Transportation crews working diligently to clear sand and snow off the roadways.

Tips on Preventing frozen pipes

Do you know what to do in the event of a power outage? Here are a few tips:

  • Wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing as well as hats, mittens, and blankets.
  • Close blinds or curtains to keep in some heat.
  • Close off rooms to avoid wasting heat.
  • Place towels or rags in cracks under doors.
  • Practice portable generator safety: use outdoors, at least 20 feet away from doors/windows/garages to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Follow instructions on proper use.
  • Once your family is safe, check on your neighbors and the vulnerable to make sure they are okay.

Safety tips for shoveling snow
With the extremely cold temperatures this week, some bodies of water may get a thin layer of ice on them. Kids and pets should NEVER try to walk on the ice in North Carolina. The ice is not thick enough to support their weight and it is extremely dangerous! Experts (no one in NC- as we don't see cold enough temperatures) say that the ice should be greater than 4" thick to walk on. We never see that kind of ice thickness in our state, so please stay off the ice.

Additional Safety Tips:

* Reduce power consumption to relieve strain on the power grid.

* Keep your cellular devices charged.

* Enable emergency alerts on your cell phone.

* Insulate pipes and let faucets drip to prevent freezing.

* Ensure that your home’s heating systems are functioning properly and call for repairs if they are not.

* When using a backup heating source, make sure you have proper ventilation to protect you and your family from carbon monoxide.

* Do not run generators or grills indoors. This includes your garage. Remember that carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless gas that is deadly.

* Have a fire extinguisher ready and accessible.
