Know Before You Go

Planning on heading to the beach this weekend? Use extreme CAUTION. Take the rip current threats from distant storms SERIOUSLY!

Hurricane Ernesto will remain a powerful hurricane & pass WELL to our east this weekend. However, large and powerful swells from Ernesto will combine with higher than normal tides to produce extremely hazardous ocean conditions, including life-threatening rip currents.

You can text OBXBEACHCONDITIONS to 77295 to have Dare County beach condition reports sent directly to your phone each day.

Hurricane Ernesto will remain a powerful hurricane & pass WELL to our east this weekend. However, large and powerful swells from Ernesto will combine with higher than normal tides to produce extremely hazardous ocean conditions, including life-threatening rip currents.

Q: What is a rip current?

A: Rip currents are powerful, channeled currents of water flowing away from shore. They typically extend from the shoreline, through the surf zone, and past the line of breaking waves.

Certain wave, tide and beach shape conditions can increase rip currents to dangerous speeds. People get in trouble when they are moved so far offshore that they are unable to get back to the beach because of fear, panic, exhaustion or inefficient swimming skills. (Rip currents pull you out, not under.)

If you're caught in a rip current:

  • Remain calm.
  • Yell and wave for help.
  • Stay afloat.
  • Swim parallel to the shore. Don’t try to swim against the current.
  • Once you no longer feel the pull of the current, then you can begin swimming to shore.

Take advantage of the FREE mulch the Town offers

Did you know the Town offers FREE mulch? In addition to looking nice, there are many benefits to using mulch.

Here’s why you’ll want to grab some:

  • Soil Health: Mulch improves soil structure and fertility, helping your plants grow stronger and healthier.
  • Water Conservation: It reduces evaporation, so your plants stay hydrated longer, saving you time and effort!
  • Weed Control: A layer of mulch smothers weeds, meaning less time weeding and more time enjoying your garden.
  • Temperature Regulation: It helps keep soil temperatures steady, protecting your plants from extreme heat and cold.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: Mulch adds a clean, finished look to your garden beds.

Mulch isn’t just a garden accessory—it’s a garden superpower!

Beach & Sound Parking Permit

At its June 26, 2024, meeting, the Kill Devil Hills Board of Commissioners approved a Town ordinance that prohibits overnight parking at the Town’s public beach and sound accesses from 2 a.m. – 4 a.m. unless a parking permit is displayed. The ordinance is intended to prohibit abuse by those who use public accesses as overflow parking, and limiting residents and property owners use of the Town’s facilities. The access parking permit will allow residents and property owners of Kill Devil Hills to park at the access from 2 a.m. – 4 a.m. At all other times our public accesses will remain open for all.

Do I need a permit? KDH residents and property owners who would like to park at a KDH access between the times of 2 a.m. – 4 a.m. should get a permit. If you feel that you will not be parking during those times an access parking permit is not needed.

How do I get a permit? Stop by the Finance Department on the 2nd floor at Kill Devil Hills Town Hall, 102 Town Hall Drive open Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to pick up your free permit. A proof of residency will be required (i.e., driver’s license, tax records, water bill, etc.) before a decal can be issued.

Where do I display the permit? The permit is a decal which must be displayed on the back windshield of your vehicle, on the lower driver’s side.

The Board of Commissioners’ commitment is for each sound or beach goer to have a fair chance at a parking space without restricting KDH residents and property owners access at any time.

If you have any questions please contact Town Staff at 252-449-5300.

Currituck County, Dare County, and the towns of Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, and Manteo are updating the Outer Banks Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan. Local governments are required to prepare and update hazard mitigation plans to be eligible for FEMA hazard mitigation assistance grants. Public input is critical to the planning process. Please take a few minutes to complete a brief public survey to provide your input on hazard risks and mitigation options. Click here or scan the QR code in the above graphic for the survey. For more information about the plan update, visit the project website at www.obx-hmp.com. On this site you will find information about upcoming and past Hazard Mitigation Planning Committee meetings and public meetings, a link for the public survey, draft documents, and other mitigation planning resources.

The Outer Banks Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan update is currently underway, and Dare County and Currituck County—as well as each county’s incorporated communities—are seeking input from the public on changes in risks and vulnerabilities as well as new opportunities for mitigation.

This Outer Banks Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan update is required for all communities to maintain eligibility for pre- and post-disaster mitigation funding from FEMA. In addition, this effort will help local communities to understand their vulnerability and develop ways to proactively mitigate risk, helping to better protect people and property from the potential effects of natural and human-caused hazards.

Public input is critical to the planning process. Please take a few minutes to complete a brief public survey to provide your input on hazard risks and mitigation options. Click here or scan the QR code in the above graphic for the survey.
