Fire Safety Tips for Dry Weather Conditions

With the ongoing dry weather, the Kill Devil Hills Fire Department wants to remind everyone of the increased fire risks and the steps we can all take to stay safe. Here are some important fire safety tips to keep in mind: •	Properly Dispose of Smoking Materials: Ensure cigarettes and matches are completely extinguished before disposal. Never throw them on the ground or out of a vehicle – discard of the materials in a non-combustible container. •	Use Grills Safely: Only use grills outdoors and keep them away from structures and out from under eaves, away from decks and railings, dry grass, and overhanging branches. Always supervise grills and ensure they are completely cooled before storing. •	Maintain Your Property: Keep your yard free of dry leaves, dead vegetation, and other potential fire fuels. Maintain a defensible space around your home. •	Fireworks that fly or explode are ILLEGAL; with the current dry conditions, it is not recommended to use any type of fireworks •	Open burning is NOT permitted in Kill Devil Hills

Leave Nothing but Footprints. . . We have the opportunity to enjoy a beautiful and clean beach. Please remove all trash and personal items from the beach each day. In Kill Devil Hills, leaving items on the beach overnight is prohibited. Trash and other items left on the beach can be harmful to people, including emergency responders, and wildlife, like hatchling sea turtles that must make their way to the water to survive. And, don’t forget to fill in all sand holes, which also create extreme hazards for others when left unattended. We want all people and wildlife to be able to continue enjoying a safe and litter-free beach.

News from the NC Department of Transportation:

The NC Department of Transportation is currently upgrading the traffic signal controllers along Croatan Highway and Ocean Boulevard/Duck Road. This upgrade will allow NCDOT staff to remotely access signal controllers for maintenance and timing purposes and will also alert NCDOT technicians of any malfunctions or errors.

Additionally, during this upgrade, the traffic signals are being changed to flash red on all approaches during malfunctions or when placed in manual flashing mode. This change is required to comply with recently updated NCDOT policy.

All red flashing operation improves intersection safety during non-normal operation and provides motorists consistency during flashing operation and power outages as the intersection becomes an all-way stop during both.
