Spring Forward Into Brighter Days Ahead!

Daylight Saving Time begins Sunday, March 10th, at 2 a.m. Remember to set your clocks forward one hour before bedtime and embrace the longer days ahead.

And while you are at it, use this opportunity to change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. If you are unable to check your detectors or need any assistance, give the KDH Fire Department a call at 252-480-4060.

Maintaining your detectors is an easy practice that could save your life.

Smoke alarms are a key part of a home fire escape plan. When there is a fire, smoke spreads fast. Working smoke alarms give you early warning so you can get outside quickly.

  • A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire. Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. Install alarms on every level of the home.
  • Smoke alarms should be interconnected. When one sounds, they all sound.
  • Large homes may need extra smoke alarms.
  • Test your smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working.
  • Today’s smoke alarms will be more technologically advanced to respond to a multitude of fire conditions, yet mitigate false alarms.
  • When a smoke alarm sounds, get outside and stay outside.
  • Replace all smoke alarms in your home every 10 years.

KDH Welcomes German Delegation

Mayor John Windley recently welcomed members of a delegation from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Germany to Kill Devil Hills.

The Mayor of Anklam, in Germany, was in attendance. The City of Anklam has historical aviation connections with Kill Devil Hills. In 1891, Otto Lilienthal, a mechanical engineer born in Anklam, achieved the first reproducibly safe gliding flight (now known as hang gliding). Much like Kill Devil Hills is known as the birthplace of aviation, Anklam is known as the birthplace of the “Glider King.” The Wright Brothers credit Otto Lilienthal and his advancements for their success in achieving the first heavier-than-air powered flight.

Mayor Windley and the delegation formed a new international relationship to build upon.

Members of the delegation that were in attendance include Patrick Dahlemann, Head of the State Chancellery; Juliane Rinas, Head of Division International Relations; Alexander Zysno, Personal Assistant to the Head of the State Chancellery; Michael Galander, Mayor of Hanseatic City Anklam; Dr. Susanne Bocher, Museum Director Mirow Castle.

New Board of Commissioners Member

At its February 5, 2024, meeting, the Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the appointment of Timothy Dillion Heikens to fill a vacancy that was created when then Commissioner Windley was elected as Mayor. At its March 6, 2024, meeting, Commissioner Heikens took his oath of office and was seated amongst the Board.
