Hurricane Preparedness Forum - August 23

Dare County Emergency Management Director Drew Pearson will be joined by Erik Heden, the National Weather Service’s local Warning Coordination Meteorologist, for a Hurricane Preparedness Forum that will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, August 23, 2023.

Speakers at the forum will share important information on preparedness actions as well as updates on weather service forecast products. Topics will include important preparedness efforts and why it’s important to never focus only upon the category of a storm but instead to focus on the storm’s potential impacts. At the end of the forum, time will be set aside for a community discussion during which attendees can ask questions and share their concerns.

The forum, which is free and open to the public, will be held both in person at the Dare County Emergency Operations Center located at 370 Airport Road in Manteo as well as virtually. Virtual attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions using the chat and/or audio features of the meeting software. For the virtual option, internet access is required, and participants must register online.

It only takes one storm to change your life and community. Tropical cyclones are among nature’s most powerful and destructive phenomena. Evaluate what you need to do to protect your home and family NOW, before the first storm of the season even forms.

Are You Prepared?

It only takes one storm to change your life and community. Tropical cyclones are among nature’s most powerful and destructive phenomena. If you haven't already done so, evaluate what you need to do to protect your home and family NOW, before a storm approaches.

Prepare now before hurricane season begins.

Take some time to prepare. You can start by making sure you have:

An evacuation plan -
Figure out where you’d go and how you’d get there if told to evacuate. You do not need to travel hundreds of miles. Identify someone, perhaps a friend or relative who doesn’t live in an evacuation zone or unsafe home, and coordinate with them to use their home as your evacuation destination. Be sure to account for your pets, as most local shelters do not permit them. Put the plan in writing for you and those you care about.

Supplies -
Just having enough supplies to make it through a hurricane isn’t enough. You need plenty to make it through what could be a LONG recovery period too.

Insurance
Make sure you have enough homeowners insurance to repair or even replace your home, and remember, standard homeowners insurance doesn’t cover flooding. Whether you’re a homeowner or renter, you’ll need a separate policy for flooding. Act now as flood insurance requires a 30-day waiting period. Find coverage and other information

A plan to secure your home
If you plan to ride out a hurricane in your home, make sure it is in good repair and up to local hurricane building code specifications.

Information on how to help your neighbors
You can play a large role in how your neighbors fare before, during and after a hurricane.

A written plan
Once you’re under pressure, having a written plan will take the guesswork out of what you need to do to protect you and your family. How to make a plan

Lifeguard Personnel in KDH With schools starting, Kill Devil Hills Ocean Rescue has lost a number of its staff. As a result, four lifeguard stands have been removed from the beach, Eden St., Coral Dr., Baum St., and Lake Dr. In addition, there are stands that will have a ‘No Lifeguard on Duty’ sign posted on them. These marked stands will vary due to staffing levels and populations at the given beach accesses. Roving patrols will continue along our beach. If you do not see a lifeguard present and have an emergency dial 911. •	Know your limitations: respect the water and avoid unsafe behaviors. •	Never swim along, swim by a lifeguard and/or have a water watcher present. •	Know how to recognize, avoid, and survive rip currents. •	Swim only in safe areas, free from water hazards. •	Do not dive into shallow or unclear water; enter feet first. •	Know how to call for help. Lifeguard Personnel in KDH

The 2023 Kill Devil Hills Ocean Rescue crew have done an outstanding job of serving our beaches and keeping folks safe this summer. As the season is winding down and crew members return to school, our staff of lifeguards begins to decrease. For this reason, lifeguard stands have been removed from the beach at Eden St., Coral Dr., Baum St., and Lake Dr.
