Love Your Live Oak CampaignThe Town of Kill Devil Hills Community Appearance Commission worked to establish an official town tree, the Live Oak. Awareness and preservation efforts are conducted during the month of May with a ‘Love Your Live Oak’ campaign.
To kick off the campaign, the Town gave away 26 mature Live Oak trees to KDH property owners. We are also giving away blue ribbons that citizens can place on their Live Oaks to assist with the awareness campaign. Ribbons can be picked up at the Town Hall, at the Administration Department, during business hours.
In addition, the Town will be sharing posts and doing giveaways on its Facebook & Instagram pages during the remainder of this month.

Take some time to prepare. You can start by making sure you have:
An evacuation plan - Figure out where you’d go and how you’d get there if told to evacuate. You do not need to travel hundreds of miles. Identify someone, perhaps a friend or relative who doesn’t live in an evacuation zone or unsafe home, and coordinate with them to use their home as your evacuation destination. Be sure to account for your pets, as most local shelters do not permit them. Put the plan in writing for you and those you care about.
Supplies - Just having enough supplies to make it through a hurricane isn’t enough. You need plenty to make it through what could be a LONG recovery period too. More information on building a disaster supply kit
Insurance Make sure you have enough homeowners insurance to repair or even replace your home, and remember, standard homeowners insurance doesn’t cover flooding. Whether you’re a homeowner or renter, you’ll need a separate policy for flooding. Act now as flood insurance requires a 30-day waiting period. Find coverage and other information
A plan to secure your home If you plan to ride out a hurricane in your home, make sure it is in good repair and up to local hurricane building code specifications. More information
Information on how to help your neighbors You can play a large role in how your neighbors fare before, during and after a hurricane. Information on how to help your neighbors
A written plan Once you’re under pressure, having a written plan will take the guesswork out of what you need to do to protect you and your family. How to make a plan
