Beach Safety

Although Hurricane Larry is forecast to remain to the east and not directly impact Eastern North Carolina, it is forecast to bring building swells and an increased risk for life threatening rip currents to NC beaches next week.

Please obey all warning flags posted on the beach. Red flags indicate NO swimming due to hazardous conditions and yellow flags indicate strong rip currents are present, use extreme caution before entering the water.

A few tips to ensure you have a safe, enjoyable beach day:

  • Check beach advisories before going in the ocean
  • Learn how to spot, avoid, and survive a rip current
  • Never swim alone, swim by a lifeguard and/or have water watchers present. We no longer have a full staff of lifeguards in KDH. View a list of beach accesses in KDH with lifeguard stands.
If you have an emergency dial 911.
