First Flight Rotary Event at Hayman ParkThe First Flight Rotary Club of Kill Devil Hills, NC held a ceremony on May 31, 2021, at Hayman Park in Kill Devil Hills to honor the club’s late President-elect and longtime member Mark J. Cutler, who died from a drowning accident off the coast of Duck, NC on July 10, 2020.
The ceremony included Kill Devil Hills Mayor Ben Sproul, town officials, First Flight Rotary Club members, and numerous family, and friends of Marks, who all gathered to dedicate a memorial bench in his honor. The memorial bench was placed in Hayman Park by the Kill Devil Hills Grounds Division. Hayman Park was an area in town that Mark loved to frequent. In addition to the Rotary Club, Mark’s father, Bob also played an instrumental part in making the bench a reality. The memorial bench also features a plaque, which is inscribed “First Flight Rotary Club in Memoriam Mark J. Cutler 1955-2020. He loved Hayman Park, the Outer Banks, and the principles of Rotary. A loyal friend, he was an inspiration to us all. Shine on Mark, beyond the sea.”
Stan Keeler, chair of the Rotary Club Membership Committee said, “Mark had just been inducted to his office in the club two days before his tragic death. Memories of his encouragement and dedication to the ideals of Rotary will build a foundation for other Rotarians and people that he met through work and play.”
Kill Devil Hills Mayor Ben Sproul reflected upon the event by saying, “the Town of Kill Devil Hills is grateful for the opportunity to have partnered with the First Flight Rotary Club and the Cutler family to honor Mark Cutler in this way. May those who pass by or sit upon the memorial bench be reminded of Mark, his integrity, fellowship, and service to others.”

Help Kill Devil Hills Kick Butt Initiative The Kill Devil Hills Community Appearance Commission (CAC) has been taking initiative to decrease the amount of cigarette butt litter throughout our community. They recently gathered with local Scout Troops and assembled 20 cigarette butt receptacles. These will be installed at various beach accesses and other locations in town. The town already has cigarette butt receptacles in place at a number of its beach accesses.
The CAC also has personal portable ashtrays available to assist smokers with another tool to help eliminate cigarette butt litter. If you’re interested in receiving a portable ashtray, email CAC Chairperson Sue Kelly at sdkelly927@aol.com.
Please do your part to keep our community clean by properly disposing of all smoking materials.
