Town of Kill Devil Hills
Glenmere Avenue beach access closed for repairs until further notice

Portion of Glenmere “Hope” Beach Access Closed for Repairs

The stairs leading to the beach at the Glenmere Avenue “Hope” beach access were severely damaged by the recent storms and rough beach conditions, and they are unsafe for use. Access to the beach is closed to the public until further notice.

Parking will continue to be available, allowing the public to get to the Little Red Mailbox and the Little Free Library. However, there is NO access to the beach. The stairs have been completely removed and the hazardous area leading to the beach will remain closed to the public until further notice. Please obey all caution signs and stay away from the taped off area.

Thank you for your patience as the Town works towards repairing this access. An update will be provided once the access has re-opened.

Beach Driving in KDH

KDH Beach Driving Permits
Available on
October 1

The Town of Kill Devil Hills’ beach driving permits will be available for purchase for the 2020-2021 beach driving season beginning Thursday, October 1, 2020. Beach driving is allowed in Kill Devil Hills (with a permit) from October 1st through April 30th. The Towns of Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head have a reciprocal program that allows a KDH beach driving permit holder to drive on Nags Head beaches and vice versa.

Kill Devil Hills permits are available at the second floor Cashier’s Window in KDH Town Hall, 102 Town Hall Drive. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Town Hall is open by appointment only. Please call 252-449-5338 to schedule a time best for you to pick up your beach driving permit and information packet.

KDH seasonal permits are $25 and KDH temporary permits are $10 (good for 14 days). Temporary permits are only available for purchase at the KDH Town Hall. In addition to payment, the following information will need to be provided: driver’s license, proof of insurance, and the vehicle’s registration certificate (VIN number and license plate number).

USE EXTREME CAUTION THIS BEACH DRIVING SEASON.

  • It is anticipated that there will be a higher volume of beach-goers this beach driving season. Pay extra attention to foot-travelers, sunbathers, and your surroundings.

  • Lifeguards have extended their service until October 15th. Provide lifeguards with ample space to allow them easy access to and from their destinations. Remember to move over for emergency lights.

  • Storms and high tides can cause rough beach conditions and may limit driving room. During high tides, portions of the beach are likely to become impassible. Obey all closure signs and notices. Check the Town’s website and social media pages regularly for any possible closures.

For additional beach driving information, including maps and safety tips, visit the Town’s website and watch the Town’s brief informational video, which highlights the beach driving season.
