"LOW RISK" IS NOT "NO RISK"
Know Your Flood Zone

Low Risk Is Not No Risk

FEMA along with the State of North Carolina has released updated flood maps for all of Dare County. Flood maps serve as the cornerstone for floodplain management. The updated maps are scheduled to be effective on June 19, 2020.

The updated maps feature significant changes from the 2006 flood maps. A large number of properties in Kill Devil Hills are being reclassified to Shaded X or X “low risk” flood zone properties and the base flood elevations are decreasing. FEMA defines the Base Flood Elevation (BFE) as the computed elevation to which the flood is anticipated to rise during the base flood.

The new maps DO NOT reflect flood risk and the historic flooding in the Town of Kill Devil Hills. Many of the reclassified properties have historically experienced flooding.

In recognition of these changes and the challenges that the new maps present, the Town of Kill Devil Hills and the other municipalities in Dare County are proposing the adoption of a flood damage prevention ordinance, that will maintain a minimum building elevation standard. The proposed ordinance will be reviewed and considered by the Town of Kill Devil Hills Board of Commissioners in the coming months.

Dare Counts 2020

Dare Counts - Census 2020

The 2020 Census is coming. The census counts all people living in the U.S. and its 5 territories once every 10 years as required by the U.S. Constitution.

Everyone living in Dare County should be counted (even children), as it is vital for our entire community.

A complete and accurate count is vital for the entire community. The basic data it collects helps to shape the future for you, your family, and your neighbors. It informs the allocation of funding for the community as well as determines the number of seats each state gets in Congress. Every person (both citizens and non-citizens) living in Dare County at the time of the Census must complete the survey.

Everyone is affected by this count. If you drive on a road, cross a bridge, have children in school, go to the doctor's office or hospital, require special assistance from federally funded programs, or use any other public service, join us and make the pledge to participate in the 2020 Census.
