On Tuesday, June 25, 2019, a large crowd of people and their dogs gathered at the Paws Park in Kill Devil Hills for its grand opening. The Kill Devil Hills Board of Commissioners began the special event by conducting a ribbon cutting ceremony. Many members of the Town Staff eagerly volunteered their efforts in grilling hotdogs and hamburgers, providing rabies vaccines and dog licenses, selling limited edition Paws Park t-shirts (which can still be purchased at the KDH Finance Department), taking fun pictures of people and their dogs (with dog-themed photo props), and assisting dogs in making one-of-a kind paw print art. Officer Gulledge and his partner K9 Officer Zar with the Kill Devil Hills Police Department led a demonstration consisting of an article search and a bite demonstration, with assistance from Lieutenant David Pierce. First Flight Middle School student Taryn Crossman (T’s Treats) set up a table with her homemade organic dog treats. Many dogs flocked to the table to get one of the special treats. The Outer Banks SPCA also joined in on the celebration providing Dare County dog licenses and fundraising materials. There were many smiles and tail wags that evening.
The Paws Park is a feature of Aviation Park. It is located at 103 Veterans Drive, across from the First Flight High School. The Paws Park has three designated areas for large dogs, small dogs, and senior dogs and dogs with special needs.
