In March of 2005, the Historic Landmark Commission finalized an inventory of potential historic landmarks and established criteria for designating local historic structures. The original inventory consisted of 125 structures and has been used as a tool to designated local historic landmarks through the North Carolina State Preservation Office. Designation of local historic landmarks is a process that includes extensive research of the property, owner notification, public hearings and approval by the State Historic Preservation Office and the Board of Commissioners. From the beginning, the Commission decided to designate structures where the owners were willing participants.
