Programs
Community Watch. The Kill Devil Hills Community Watch Program enlists the aid of citizens to keep their neighborhoods safe. Members of the watch are usually local, year-round residents who have a good idea of who belongs and doesn’t belong in the neighborhood. The Community Watch is organized by sector and a Kill Devil Hills officer is responsible for each sector in the Town. Meetings of watch members are held to discuss issues of concern and pass along information to the public about criminal activity.
Stick ‘Em Up. The Stick ‘Em Up program was created to help ensure the security of businesses within the Town. There is no need to sign up for the program. Officers conduct nightly checks of businesses to make sure doors are locked, windows are secured and no unauthorized vehicles are parked on the business property. After making a check of the business, officers will leave a sticker on the door indicating the building has been checked and found secure. If an officer discovers a problem, he or she will attempt to contact the owner through an emergency contact list maintained by Dare Central (911). If the emergency contact information for you business is not up-to-date, please call Dare Central on their non-emergency line (473-3444).
Ident-A-Kid. The Ident-A-Kid program is offered by the Kill Devil Hills Police Department to help record important information about children in case they run away, are abducted or otherwise go missing. Biographical information is recorded, fingerprints and photographs are taken of each child. This information is NOT maintained by the Police Department; rather it is left with the parents who will have it ready to provide to any law enforcement agency who might need it on short notice to help locate a missing child. Residents can stop by the police department with their child for fingerprinting and photographing and to pick up the Ident-A-Kid package. Many local event organizers request the police department participate in their planned activity by setting up an Ident-A-Kid booth.
