Profile of the Town
Kill Devil Hills is located in Dare County on Bodie Island on the coast of eastern North Carolina. Bodie Island is no longer an actual island, but a peninsula connected north of the North Carolina-Virginia state line. We are approximately 200 miles east of Raleigh, the state capitol, and 90 miles south of Virginia Beach and Norfolk, Virginia - the closest large metropolitan area. The county is named in honor of Virginia Dare, the first-born child of English parents in the New World. This area contains much of what is known as North Carolina's "Outer Banks" resort and vacation region and is host to such attractions as the
Cape Hatteras National Seashore, the
North Carolina Aquarium, the
Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, the
Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, and the
Wright Brothers National Monument.
We are proud to be the location of Orville and Wilbur Wright's glider experiments in the years prior to their first successful heavier-than-air powered flight on December 17, 1903. The park and museum at the Wright Brothers National Monument commemorates their unmatched contributions to world history.
